Air Filter For Cigarette Smoke
How is smoke getting into my HVAC system?
I just bought a condo and I am having a lot of trouble with cigarette smoke from the units of other residents getting in to my unit. I am trying to figure out whether it is being drawn in to the air system in my unit through cracks under the door, etc. or whether it is getting into the air system in my unit through air that is shared by common elements of system. Does anyone know how I can find out which it is?
other info -
*The condos have a common stairwell that smells like smoke a lot of times
*There is an intake with filter in my unit that is quite near the door to the common stairwell
*The condo association decides when to switch between heat and cold for the whole building, so obviously there is some shared element to the system.
I will very much appreciate any advice anyone might have. I have asthma and the smoke is really causing problems for me.
Thanks!

Complain to the condo association and advise them of your health issues. Ask them to forbid smoking in common areas like the stairwell.
Check your local laws regarding smoking and if there is a violation, report it.
Try visiting a store like Home Depot to see if there is some type of filter you can install on the vents in your condo unit.
Unfortunately, I think your only other option is to move.
