Water Vapor Cigarette Nicotine Free

What are some ideas on thing to do instead of smoke?
My husband is quitting smoking after almost 20 years. He says that it's the hardest after a meal when he would usually have a cigarette. What are some ideas of things he could do that are relaxing to take the place of smoking?

Hi Amber

First off, kudos to your husband for quitting - he's on the road to a much more satisfying life. However, it sounds like he's having problems with withdrawal symptoms and nicotine cravings; nicotine is a very addictive drug as you no doubt know, and cutting it off can be a very hard thing for the body to deal with. It's not an issue of 'being tough' - it's very real and physiological. That said, in my experience most people find that nicotine replacement therapy or gradual reduction, or a combination of the two, works best in keeping people away from old habits.

There are three primary devices that deliver nicotine in the modern quit-smoking market - nicotine gum, nicotine patches, and a relatively new device known as an electronic cigarette. The first, nicotine gum, is typically a very light dose and isn't appropriate until you're near the very end of the quitting process. Patches, on the other hand, typically are split into 3 different steps, with the first step having the highest dose of nicotine and the third the least; over time, you simply reduce the dosage of nicotine you apply while remaining smoke-free. The third option as I mentioned are electronic cigarettes - these things are pretty neat, and have one particular advantage over the previous two methods. The way they work is through using nicotine cartridges and water vapor; there's no other chemicals involved, as opposed to the nearly 4000 in traditional cigarettes. Over time, you do like you do with the nicotine patches and gradually reduce your dosage until you don't need it anymore. I mentioned there was one bonus to this device earlier, though, and that's the fact that it can aid in physically replacing the urges a smoker gets during the times they're used to smoking; for example, many smokers smoke on lunch break at work - if you're struggling to quit and you go outside to this regular place where you used to smoke, the urge is much stronger because it's part of the daily routine for that person. I think I covered the basics...there's a lot more information at http://smokefreeme.info as well; best wishes to your husband on his quit smoking campaign! :)
