Truth About Smoking Cigarettes
How do you restore a oil painting from years of cigarette stains?
I've inherited an oil painting that I remember since I was a young child. It is of a beautiful mountain scene and a brook running through a forest. However, though I love him dearly, my father smoked cigarettes and smoked indoors. The painting is now heavily yellowed, partially because of age but also due to years of cigarette smoke stains. Can it be restored? Can it be restored economically?

Yes it can be restored, but restoration is a long slow labor intensive process and is therefore costly. They do a lot of it with q tips and special solutions that won't damage the paint.
You could try cleaning yours with a bit of mild soap and warm water.Wring the cloth out until it is only damp. and start in an inconspicuous corner. perhaps on what was under the frame. See if it lifts the paint--it shouldn't, but you never know with old paintings. Don't do it if there is any cracks or imperfections in the painting
To tell the truth I would get it appraised and see if it is worth getting it professionally done, before I did anything
i tell you what i saw today and how to properly smoke a cigarette
